FOX
CVRW - FOX
The original Prototype for the CVRW series, developed off the sucess of the Ferret and its predessor the Dingo.
Where as the previous two, were more of a liaision vehicle. In a new cold war era, the emphasis became more about the speed and quality of information that could be provided to higher echelons.
This brought with it new technology, such as Imagine Intensiification sights, allowing for 24/7 Recce. And new weaponary such are the Rarden Cannon, improving survivability.
CVRW - Vixen
With the Fox in production, and the CVRT series of vehicles rapidly expanding. A thought was given to the expansion of the CVRW family, by the inclusion of a liaision / specialist vehicle to the series.
A number of Prototype Vixen's were developed, but the vehicle never went into production. As such the vehicle it was due to partly replace, (the Ferret) stayed in service well into the 1990's.
it wasn't fully clear what the future intentions were for Vixen. Though with a crew of 4, it could have been used for specialist Engineering and Signaling tasks as well as general command and liaison
CVRW - Polecat / Stoat
There was a trial development of a Fox chassis mounting the standard Peak Engineeting one-man turret, mounted with a GPMG and standard No 12 MK1 Smoke Grenade dischargers.
The vehicle was considered as a replacement for the aging Ferret FV701 in service during the Northern Ireland troubles.
In the Early 1990's when the CVRW Fox finally came out of service, a similar scenario was consider for export to the Mexican border forces.
Panga Armoured Reconnaissance Vehicle
Developed for the Malayan Goverment, by this time the limited benefit of run flat tyres had been noted and this version, regressed to the Ferret arrangement of carrying its own spare tyre.
I have no details of the turret, but the No 12 MK1 Smoke Grenade dischargers are standard issue so it may have been made in the UK.
There is no record of this export opertunity ever being succesful.
Fox - Milan Armoured Reconnaissance Vehicle
Following the Early 1960's development of the Ferret Mk2/6 (FV703), with the Vigilant ATGW system.
The UK Defence split its ATGW procurement into a vehicle based Swingfire system, as used by the CVRT Striker (FV102). And various man portable systems including MILAN ATGW.
CVRT Spartan FV120 MCT, was later developed as a dual launcher MILAN system, I assume that this was the CVRW development around the same time. But unlike the FV120, it never saw service.
Fox - 25mm Hughes Chain Gun
Although the UK developed 30mm RARDEN cannon was an accurate weapon, it was limited to 3 round clips and a gun capacity of 6 rounds.
I assume this was an attempt to give the vehicle a more effective anti helicopter and general suppression role.
Noting the limited turret round capacity, and the additional turret weight. This vehicle would probably have been top heavy effecting its off road performance.
