Fox

CVRW : Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance Wheeled : FOX

Developed in the 1960's by Daimler, but then went on to be manufactured at the royal   ordinance factory in Leeds. For full detail of its development please look under the Design and development part of this website.

Production of the Fox began in 1972, with the 1st units entering service in 1975. Whereas the Fox stated its career with the regular army, it ended up being a mostly territorial army and infantry Recce vehicle. Finally finishing its service around 1993, with over 300 units having been produced

In itself it was the test bed of a lot of new ideas and technolgies, that were developed during the cold war. New Aluminum/Magnesium armour was used, this had the benefit of making the vehicle lighter for its given size. As well as allowing for thicker plates providing a self supporting monocoque welded structure.

Vehicle sights had moved on from infra red, to image intensifying (II) sights and were used for both the driver and gunner. These in themselves formed a substantial part of the cost of the Fox. A new 30mm Semi automatic cannon was developed by RARDE at Enfield, the titles where mixed to call it RARDEN.

Finally while still sticking to a British supplier, the Fox was provided with a militarised version of the Jaguar engine from the racing car of the day, the E type, providing power and performance over the previous Rolls Royce engines used.
